The Mala is a set of prayer beads. The traditional Mala is strung with 108 beads. The number 108 is held to be most auspicious, a perfect three digit multiple of three, it’s components adding up to nine. Three is the number representing supreme balance. Mala’s are used to stay focused during prayerful meditation. The necklace is held in one hand and fingered in a circle; one bead for every repetition of mantra. Each Mala has an extra 109th bead (sumeru), which dangles outside the circle. When your finger’s touch the sumeru, you are meant to pause from your meditations and thank your teachers.
