The God of contentment, happiness and abundance, Hotei has a cheerful face and a big belly. In Japan, Hotei persists in folklore as one of the seven Lucky Gods. He is almost always shown smiling or laughing, hence his nickname in Chinese, the “Laughing Buddha”. He is often depicted with a large cloth bag over his back, one that never empties, for he uses it to feed the poor and needy. He is often depicted holding a Chinese fan called an Oogi, said to be a ‘wish giving’ fan. Place a Hotei in your home or business to ensure prosperity and happiness.
